Review of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
The vestal virgin’s life is a peaceful one

With new technologies like the memory-erasing procedure depicted in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, you have the power to wipe unwanted memories from your mind. This is a science fiction movie about an engineering procedure that can delete whole aspects of people’s memories so that, for example, Clementine can forget she ever met Joel and let go of her love for him.

“Of course, you can’t damage your brain,” the process’s inventor states. “But,” he concludes in his most cherishing voice, “technically speaking, the procedure is a brain damage.”

The movie “You Were Never Really Here,” which is a neorealism that has been made by screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, is an experimental and chaotic journey through a cinematic universe where viewers are often confused, because of the narrative ambivalence. Jim Carrey plays Joel and Kate Winslet plays Clementine, in a movie that appears to be constantly going nowhere.

The protagonist’s sanity, in which they see subtleties that aren’t even present to the characters, is a tribute to their skill. They center their stories so that readers can actually care about them even when they’re lost in the craziness of their own world.

A radical example of this style is “Maze Cinema”, a movie that takes place within itself, continually redefining everything and then throwing it up in the air and redefining it again.

At the beginning of the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Joel and Clementine were in love and had an affair. She finished with him, went to Dr. Howard Mierzwiak at Lacuna Inc., and asked for him to be erased from her memory.

When we think back on someone who was once important in our life, we remember the good times rather than the bad. This is something that Joel enjoys because he has a switch in mind to block the memory right before his brain erases it. However, this ability eventually reaches its limit, and Joel decides he should like to remember her after all.

If you think the movie sounds inconspicuous and possibly easy to penetrate, you have no idea. The opening with Joel looking for a story and picking one up quickly is just that, as Joel meets Clementine on the train during his unexpected lunch break.

Synchronized in their lives and patterns, they feel an unspoken connection when they meet. They will each experience twists of memory and shared moments in the film.

Lacuna seems like a thriving business, but in reality, there are really only the owner and staff of his company: Dr. Mierzwiak and assistants Stan (Mark Ruffalo), Patrick (Elijah Wood) and Mary (Kirsten Dunst). There are numerous complications to be described as it would be unfair to reveal the plot, or even impossible.

“Eternal Sunshine” was directed by Michel Gondry, who is a music video veteran. His first feature, “The Human Nature”, was also written by Kaufman. One of the film’s idiosyncratic pauses towards genius before veering away from it.

A famous scene from the movie “Big Night” is an example of how special table manners and etiquette are when a rodent expresses his polite nature.

Despite its intentionally confusing structure, “Eternal Sunshine” has a center of emotionality, and that’s what makes it work. Though they jump through different stages of romance and reality, what remains constant is the human need for love and companionship. Even after several years of searching, humans are driven by that need to keep looking no matter what the odds.

If they keep on meeting, as opposites they may be a good match, and so they might fall in love and need to switch Lacuna Inc. with the Witness Protection Program.

He’s been successful with “The Truman Show” and “The Majestic,” but Jim Carrey really takes it to the next level in “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond.” He plays a character so isolated that a memory is better than nothing.

With Joel as the protagonist, Kate Winslet is the right foil, becoming exasperated by his peculiarities while paradoxically still having to admit they’re cute. The antics at Lacuna are just one level of reality, with secrets being revealed that are surprisingly touching.

His goal seems to be penetrating the human mind–he even had one of his characters end up in the head of John Malkovich, and is rumored to have been filming in the same body at the time.

“The insight of “Eternal Sunshine” is that, at the end of the day, our memories provide the only sense of identity that we have, and when they’re gone, so are we.”
